My advocacy journey began long before I became an education advocate. For more than 25 years, I have worked with children and families in a variety of social service settings, including work with youth, survivors of domestic violence, and individuals with disabilities.
When my son was born in 2012 with Down syndrome, I suddenly experienced complex systems from a different perspective-- not only as a professioal, but as a parent. An unexpectedly long hospital stay and time in the NICU quickly taught me what it meant to advocate for my own child. The work I had been passionate about for years became deeply personal.
That experience eventually led me to work on disability and education advocacy. Today, I use both my professional experience and my perspective as a parent to help families understand the special education process, find their voice at the table, and advocate effectively for their children.
